SNAP certification, ‘cash mob’ expected to boost Jubilee Market

After months of waiting, Mission Waco’s grocery store Jubilee Food Market, has been certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take SNAP payments. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is expected to help increase traffic to the store.

The store is set to gain attention with a promotional event that is being held on Saturday February 4, 2017. Starting at noon, First National Bank of Central Texas will be handing out $1,000 worth of vouchers that can be redeemed at either the market or the Urban Edibles food truck located outside.

The store, which usually sees about 100 shoppers per day, needs 100 to 150 more to break even. Mission Waco finance director, Bruce Brown, has high hopes that SNAP will assist in meeting these numbers.

“Everyone has their fingers crossed, hoping it works,” Everett said. “I think being able to take SNAP benefits is the next step in the equation of making sure families in the neighborhood have access to food. We’ll really have a better idea how successful the market is in the next 24 to 36 months.”
