City & Waco Family Medicine provide rent assistance, job interview for trainees

By Heaven Lee

UpSkill Waco has a new partnership within our initiative. We are excited to announce our partnership with the City of Waco and Waco Family Medicine for our Medical Office Certification course. We will continue offering free training in this partnership but add rental assistance and a guaranteed interview.

Medical Office Certification is a four-week course entailing customer service, data management, medical terminology, business writing and grammar, scheduling, and computer skills. The course prepares participants to work in settings such as doctor offices, hospitals, laboratories, or health departments. Heart of Texas Goodwill provides job readiness, and this section includes resume updates, mock interviews, and soft skills. The class is held during the evening — 6-8:30 p.m., so individuals have the opportunity to work and UpSkill or reskill.

Rent and education advancement can be two expensive factors. Waco is a city where individuals have excessive housing costs. An “excessive housing cost” is defined as spending more than 30% of one’s monthly income on housing. Additionally, data shows low postsecondary attainment rates, with 62% of our population having only a high school diploma or equivalent. Our hope is that, with the assistance, individuals will have the opportunity to transition smoothly into their new careers and make higher wages to benefit their households.

Our goal is to ensure businesses have the skilled workers they need and individuals are able to earn family-sustaining wages. Any local businesses or corporations interested in partnering with UpSkill Waco, please contact us.
